Cobalt (element symbol Co) is a silver-white ferromagnetic metal, and cobalt pollution refers to the pollution of cobalt to the environment. Cobalt poisoning occurs whenever a person ingests more than 500mg. In this chapter, water quality online monitoring instrument manufacturers will work with you to understand cobalt pollution to water bodies and online monitoring of cobalt in sewage.
How Does Cobalt Pollute Water?
Cobalt is often present in natural water in the form of cobalt oxide and cobalt carbonate in water, or it is deposited in the bottom, or it is adsorbed by the bottom substance, but it is rarely dissolved in water. The average amount of cobalt in fresh water is 0.2 micrograms per liter. In the form of hydrated complex ions of cobalt or other complex ions in an acidic solution, the solubility gradually increases in the form of [Co(OH)4] 2- in an alkaline solution. The ligands in cobalt and natural water often form bivalent complex ions, but when forming complex ions with ligands such as ammonia, ammonium and nitro-containing compounds, cobalt is first oxidized by molecular oxygen to form trivalent complex ions. The average content of cobalt in seawater is only 0.02 µg/l, and the dissolved cobalt mainly exists in the state of CO2+ and CoCO3. The ratio of cobalt concentration between fresh water and seawater shows that cobalt is moderately enriched in sediments near the mouth of the sea. Cobalt is more toxic to fish and aquatic animals than to warm-blooded animals. The critical concentration of cobalt toxicity is 0.5mg/l, and the concentration of cobalt reaches 10mg/l, which can kill fish.
How to Judge Whether the Cobalt Content in Water Exceeds the Standard and Ensure the Safety of Water Quality?
In order to ensure the safety of water quality, water quality online monitoring is necessary! The T8000-Co online monitoring instrument for cobalt in water produced by Hangzhou Moody is a new generation of automatic online monitoring instrument developed technically based on China’s standard method. The pre-treated water sample is injected into a special reactor by injection pump for pre-treatment of water sample. After the reaction, the water sample is detected by highly selective synthetic substances and special sensors that have a linear relationship with the content of cobalt in the water. According to the degree of electrical change, the content of cobalt in the water sample can be calculated.
