Is There a Relationship Between Ammonia and Total Nitrogen? What Does it Matter?
Date:2024-08-30 Browse: 39

The four conventional parameters in water pollution are COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen. Is there any relationship between ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen? What does it matter? This chapter water quality online monitoring instrument manufacturers to understand together with you!

Ammonia nitrogen refers to the nitrogen in the form of free ammonia and ammonium ions in water, that is to say, the nitrogen content of animal organic matter is higher than that of general plant organic matter, and the nitrogen-containing organic matter of human and animal feces is unstable and easily decomposed into ammonia, so when the ammonia nitrogen content in water is increased, it refers to the combined nitrogen in the form of ammonia or ammonium ions.

Total nitrogen refers to the total amount of various forms of inorganic and organic nitrogen in water, including inorganic substances such as nitrous nitrogen, nitrous nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen and organic nitrogen such as proteins, amino acids and organic amines.

It can be understood from the above that ammonia nitrogen is one of the components of total nitrogen, but the ratio of ammonia nitrogen to total nitrogen is not easy to determine! Sometimes there may also be a situation where the total nitrogen measured value is lower than ammonia nitrogen, resulting in the following reasons:

1.Because the nitrogen compounds in water are constantly changing, the time and place of storage of the collected samples will be different, which will lead to different changes of nitrogen compounds under the influence of circumstances or other factors, resulting in the situation that the measured ammonia nitrogen in the same water sample is higher than the total nitrogen.

2.If ammonia is stored around the laboratory or there is a bathroom around, the air in the laboratory will contain ammonia and ammonium salts to varying degrees. Both ammonia and ammonium salts are extremely soluble in water, so that the experimental water will contain ammonium ions to varying degrees. This kind of environment brings about incalculable errors to the analysis and experiment of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen, especially to the experimental test of ammonia nitrogen.

3.At the same time, the determination process of ammonia nitrogen does not require digestion, while the digestion time of total nitrogen requires 125℃ and 30 minutes, so the final determination result will be affected.

The ammonia nitrogen online monitor and total nitrogen online analyzer produced by Modi-Tech are used to detect the content of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen in water! It is a fully automatic online real-time detection instrument, friends who need to know can pay attention!
